OLGA DANILOVIC vs MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

In the second round of the 2016 French Open Juniors, Marketa Vondrousova defeated Olga Danilovic (6-3, 6-3) in straight sets. Their only other encounter was at this year’s United Cup in Australia, where Vondrousova triumphed 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. The latter match was played on a hard court, which historically disadvantages Danilovic, who has won only 48.6% of her matches on that surface compared to 69.5% on clay.

This season, Danilovic has a 16-6 record on clay courts. Six of those victories came in Paris, including three in the main draw, where she defeated former semifinalist Martina Trevisan and the 10th-ranked Danielle Collins. Despite needing three sets to overcome Collins and last-round opponent Donna Vekic, Danilovic is clearly in fine fettle.

For the record, Olga entered this tournament ranked 125 and has since climbed to 107. A victory today would propel her to a career-high ranking of 78. On the other hand, last year’s Wimbledon winner, Vondrousova, comes into this match with a 14-9 year-to-date record. The 24-year-old is currently at a career-high ranking of 6, which will improve to 5 if she advances past Danilovic.

WIMBLEDON WINNER

Although Vondrousova is the more accomplished player, she required three sets to get past Katie Volynets. Comfortable wins on either side over Rebeka Masarova (6-3, 6-3) and Chloe Paquet (6-1, 6-3) were to be as expected.

While Vondrousova plays an aggressive game and can beat most players on the WTA Tour, she has shown vulnerability with recent losses to Mirra Andreeva, Sorana Cirstea, Anhelina Kalinina, and Marta Kostyuk. The way the Czech plays will always leave her vulnerable, and we can imagine her being in for a hard time today.

In summary, given Danilovic’s efforts this week and her performance in Adelaide, she certainly has a puncher’s chance. With a favourable head start, there’s reason to believe the Serbian could cause a shock result.

While we might invest a little in the outright win, let’s be pragmatic and take the 1.5 set head start!
