WTA MADRID: SEMI-FINAL DAY

ARYNA SABALENKA vs ELENA RYBAKINA

As the old adage goes, “cream rises to the top.” With three out of the four highest-ranked players advancing to the semifinals in Madrid, we’re in for an intriguing finish!

Since 2019, these two have faced off 8 times. Aryna Sabalenka holds a 5-3 edge in their head-to-head matchups, but Elena Rybakina has won three of their last four encounters. Interestingly, none of these matches took place on clay!

Currently, holding 6673 points, Rybakina sits at the fourth spot in the rankings. Should the 24-year-old triumph in the tournament, she would surpass Sabalenka to claim the third position.

On all surfaces, the player from Kazakhstan has a 30/5 record so far this year. On the clay courts, she boasts 90 victories out of 129 matches, which translates to a solid 69.8% win rate. Rybakina entered this tournament fresh off a victory in Stuttgart.

She defeated Lucia Bronzetti, Mayar Sherif, Sara Bejlek, and Julia Putintseva in the four rounds leading up to this point. While her first three wins were secured in straight sets, yesterday’s match against Putintseva saw her having to fend off two match points for her opponent!

It’s worth noting that this marks Elena’s deepest run in Madrid. In her three prior appearances, she never advanced beyond the third round.

Regarding Sabalenka, clinching victory in today’s match would propel the Belarusian player back to the second rank. Having won this tournament for the last two years, the 26-year-old is again striving to preserve her ranking points.

Aryna boasts a 19/5 record this year, with the standout achievement being her victory at the Australian Open. Despite facing a downturn in form after the tragic loss of her boyfriend, Sabalenka has shown resilience, particularly on her favoured surface. She demonstrated her strength by defeating Magda Linette, Robin Montgomery, Danielle Collins, and Mirra Andreeva.

Based on our observations, the Belarusian player has been steadily improving with each round. Although she faced challenges at the beginning of the tournament, her recent victories over Collins and Andreeva indicated a return to top form, signalling her readiness to defend her title. In short, maintaining her current performance level should be sufficient for Sabalenka to progress.
