MARKETA VONDROUSOVA vs KAROLINA PLISKOVA
Karolina Pliskova leads the head-to-head 3-0, and all three wins were completed in straight sets. While two of those matches were played in 2019 and 2020, the other was at this year’s Dubai. On that occasion, the 31-year-old beat her compatriot 6/3 6/4.
Nevertheless, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, and Marketa Vondrousova is starting to find her best form! In fact, since Dubai, the 23-year-old beat a number of higher-ranked opponents.
For the record, Marketa beat Marie Bouzkova and Ons Jabeur in Indian Wells before losing in 3-sets against Karolina Muchova. At the current tournament in Miami, she thrashed Tatjana Maria (6/4 6/1) and 11th-ranked Veronika Kudermetova (6/4 6/2).
At her best (July 2019), Vondrousova reached a career-high rank of 14. While she dropped out of the top 100 since a valid excuse was being plagued by injuries.
For now, Vondrousova appears to be injury free! With her confidence growing, it won’t be long before she’s back at the right end of the ranking table!
Meanwhile, in her first match, Pliskova was quickly on top of Xinyu Wang. While she went on to win 6/2 6/4, we thought Wang bottled it!
To cut a long story short, the Chinese player went a break-up in the 2nd set. However, her game dropped off and she allowed Karolina to retake control.
In short, Pliskova has always been particularly effective at bullying lesser opponents. She’s still capable of playing at a high level, and her match fitness is guaranteed. All the same, she does have limitations and her record against top players is poor!
While Vondrousova needs to build on her recent success, we can only imagine one winner of this match.
