HEATHER WATSON vs KAROLINA PLISKOVA

You might be surprised to learn these two 32-year-olds have only met once. That encounter was in 2014, a breakthrough year for Karolina Pliskova, who broke into the top 25 and won two tournaments. Incidentally, Heather Watson triumphed in their clay court match in Prague and she went on to win the entire tournament.

By 2017, Pliskova had climbed to the number-one ranking, displacing Simona Halep after two years in the top ten. However, despite winning 17 tournaments and over $25 million in prize money, Pliskova never felt like a natural number one. After all, she never won a Grand Slam, and her best performance at the Tour Finals was reaching the semi-finals in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Her average win rate of 66.44% pales in comparison to Serena Williams’ 83% and Iga Swiatek’s 81.78%.

In recent years, Pliskova’s performance has declined, dropping her to number 50 in the rankings. Her year-to-date record is a modest 14-10, and she finished the last season with only 22 wins out of 42 matches. In the first round of Nottingham, Pliskova struggled to defeat an out-of-form Alicia Parks, making seven double faults and getting broken twice.

On the other hand, Heather Watson began her Nottingham campaign with a tough match against Kayla Day. After losing the first set 4-6, she rallied to win the next two sets 6-0 and 6-4, ending a streak of four successive defeats. Watson’s performance was notable for her six aces and only two double faults.

Looking back at the last season, Nottingham was a highlight for Watson. After qualifying, she defeated June Niemeier, Tatjana Maria, and Victoria Golubic to reach the semi-final.

Although Watson’s career stats don’t match Pliskova’s, she’s maintaining her form and has shown she’s capable and can handle big hitters. Given Pliskova’s recent struggles, Watson stands a great chance if the first round is anything to go by.

In summary, the odds are massively appealing!
