ELISABETTA COCCIARETTO vs LAUREN DAVIS
Lauren Davis started the season in good fashion. In fact, she won a tournament in Hobart by beating today’s opponent in the final!
In her next tournament, Davis could only reach the 2nd round of the Australian Open. While the 29-year-old beat Danka Kovinic she was no match for her next opponent Elise Mertens.
Davis failed to qualify for Doha, and in the 2nd round of Dubai, she was destroyed (6/0 6/1) by Aryna Sabalenka. Subsequently, Lauren was beaten by Katherine Sebov in Charleston and Sorana Cirstea in Madrid.
Both those tournaments were played on clay and so was last week’s challenger in Reus. Incidentally, the American made it to the quarter-final by beating Julia Grabher, Vicktoriya Tomova, and Osorio Serrano. At that stage, the same player who beat (Sorana Cirstea) in Madrid did the same again!
Lauren won 92 of her 153 clay matches, but on 7 visits to Rome, she hasn’t progressed past the 2nd round.
As for Elisabetta Cocciaretto, she starts the week on a career-high rank of 45. The 22-year-old is 14-9 on the year, and an even better 6-1 on clay.
For the record, the Italian won 67.5% of her clay matches, and in 2020 reach the final of a prestigious event in Prague.
Also, Cocciaretto won a recent tournament in San Luis (WTA125). On her way to taking the trophy, Zacarias, Podoroska, Zidansek, Avanesyan, and Errani were her victims.
Interestingly, Elisabetta is 0-4 in Rome. In her defense, she was only beaten by top players Garcia, Bencic, Anisimova, and Begu.
To conclude, Davis won her most recent match with Cocciaretto, but the Italian player won their other meeting. Elisabetta is going to benefit from the surface, and the crowd will be supporting the local girl!
