WTA ROME – ROUND THREE PICK
BARBORA KREJCIKOVA vs JELENA OSTAPENKO
Two French Open winners going head to head in this one. For the record, Jelena Ostapenko won the slam in 2017, whereas Barbora Krejcikova took the title in 2021.
As for past meetings, Ostapenko leads this match-up 3-2. However, two of her wins came way back in 2015 meaning they have less relevance.
Since 2021, Krejcikova beat her opponent in Dubai and Melbourne. All three meetings were on a hard court, and Ostapenko’s win came at last year’s Doha.
While Krejcikova didn’t have the best (26/15) of years in 2022, much of that can be put down to injuries. Nevertheless, the former number two has started to recover her ranking points, and this year her 20-9 took her back to rank 13.
Incidentally, the 27-year-old won this year’s Dubai, and in doing so beat Kasatkina, Sabalenka, Pegula, and Swiatek. Subsequently, Sabelenka knocked the Czech player out of three tournaments, but there is no shame in those results!
For the most part, Ostapenko is having her usual ‘’up & down’’ season. In fact, the 25-year-old is just 15-10 (YTD) with her best performance being the QF of the Australian Open.
In her first match here, the Latvian won a stuttering encounter with Sorana Cirstea. While Jelena picked it up again towards the end, the body language of both players lacked conviction.
Based on what we have been witnessing, we wouldn’t want to look any further than Krejcikova. In short, she’s mentally more stable, and her ability to play the percentage game is undoubted. Take Barbora to help Ostapenko in digging her own grave!
