WTA ROME SEMI-FINAL PICK
JELENA OSTAPENKO vs ELENA RYBAKINA
In the quarter-final, Elena Rybakina fought hard to come from behind and progress past Iga Swiatek.
However, we need to recognize that Rybakina did benefit from her opponent picking up a match-ending injury. At the time of Swiatek’s retirement, it was all square at 2-2 in the third set!
To be fair, Rybakina was striking the ball nicely and matching her opponent in the long rallies. We could even suggest that by hanging in she forced the injury on her opponent.
There is no doubt that Elena is fitter and tougher than she’s ever been, and the reward is a career-high rank of five!
Despite the slower conditions being against her, Jelena Ostapenko saw off the challenges from Cirstea, Krejcikova, Kasatkina, and Badosa.
In Wednesday’s match, Ostapenko was all over Badosa with a dominant display. In fact, the only disappointment was she needed three sets to finish the job.
While Jelena can be a bit reckless, her big hitting is unstoppable! The way she had Badosa on the back foot for most of the match was impressive.
For the record, the Latvian leads the head-to-head 2-1. Albeit, we should recognize that she was beaten in the QF of this year’s Australian Open by Rybakina.
In conclusion, we can understand why Rybakina is the bookmaker’s favorite. After all, she beat Ostapenko when they last met, she’s the higher-ranked player. Nevertheless, Jelena is a big talent, and if she brings her A-Game this is her match for the taking!
