EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA vs JELENA OSTAPENKO

Interestingly, these two players are ranked within one place of each other. However, Ekaterina Alexandrova leads the head-to-head 5/2, and she won both meetings on hard-court. On that note, both players have similar strike rates on this surface!

As it stands, on the back of this year’s 30/17, Alexandrova is ranked one place higher than her opponent. Meanwhile, Ostapenko is 32/17, and the highlight of her year was reaching the QF of both Melbourne and New York.

At the US Open, Jelena Ostapenko won 4 matches on her way to reaching the quarter-final. Each of those matches went the distance, including the ones against Jasmine Paolini, Elina Avanesyan, and Bernarda Pera.

It was the same scenario in the 4th round, but on this occasion, Iga Swiatek was her victim. For the record, the Latvian came from a set down to beat (3/6 6/3 6/1) the then number one.

Normally, after playing in Grand Slams, Jelena tends to take a bit of time off. By her standards, this is a quick turnaround and we don’t expect her to be at her best!!

In New York, Alexandrova could only reach the 3rd round. Also, she made the same stage in Paris and Australia, but she was able to reach the 4th round of Wimbledon.

For the most part, Ekaterina does most of her winning at 250/500 tournaments. In fact, over the past two years, she won Hertogenbosch (twice) and South Korea.

Incidentally, in the final of that last-named tournament, her opponent was no less than Ostapenko.

Consequently, we fancy the chances of Alexandrova. Our reasoning includes her head-to-head, and this being her level of the tournament. Since motivation is always going to be a factor, it’s another factor in taking the 28-year-old.
