WTA STRASBOURG: QUARTER-FINAL PREVIEW & PICK

LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA vs BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA

Two top 20 players are set to face off in their first-ever meeting.

Credit to Liudmila Samsonova for her tenacious three-set victories over Barbora Krejcikova and Leylah Annie Fernandez. In her first match of the week, Samsonova took 3 hours and 2 minutes to overcome former French Open champion Krejcikova.

However, Samsonova’s focus wavered after a strong start in winning the first set 6-2 and leading 5-2 in the second. She missed a match point and lost the second set in a tiebreak. Fortunately, the 25-year-old recovered in time to win the third set, although she benefitted from her opponent’s fatigue.

For the record, in her second match, Samsonova needed 2 hours and 25 minutes to defeat Fernandez. Despite losing the first set and trailing by a break in the second, she capitalized on her opponent’s loss of focus to turn the match around.

Samsonova’s gritty performances highlight both her determination and the struggles faced by her opponents. The difference between winning and losing came down to perseverance and the will to fight until the end. The question now is whether Samsonova is ready for another tough match at a WTA 250 event just before the French Open.

THE PRIDE OF BRAZIL

Beatriz Haddad Maia began the week ranked 14th, five places ahead of her opponent. While the 27-year-old has had a modest season with a 15-13 record, she has shown improvement since the tour returned to clay, boasting a 7-4 record on this surface.

In April, the Brazilian reached the quarterfinals in Madrid, defeating Sara Errani, Emma Navarro, and Maria Sakkari, and even took a set from Iga Swiatek. Although she didn’t progress beyond the third round in Rome, she put up a strong fight in a tight three-set match against Madison Keys.

At the current tournament in Strasbourg, Haddad Maia defeated Navarro in straight sets (6-4, 7-6) in a match characterized by quality play and lengthy rallies. She demonstrated solid focus and her trademark resilience.

Realistically, we believe Samsonova’s game might falter against a tenacious player like Haddad Maia. The Brazilian’s ability to narrow the court and force unforced errors should give her an advantage. Finally, time on court is a big factor, and it’s that which turns this bet into a big one!!
