WTA STUTTGART – BETTING PREVIEW
DONNA VEKIC vs EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
Ekaterina Alexanadrova has the better clay pedigree, but she’s hardly bombproof! We believe this first-round match is a good opportunity to take on the Russian player!
Alexandrova arrived here on the back of making the quarter-final of Charleston. At that tournament, the 28-year-old beat Yulia Putintseva and Julia Grabher before losing to Belinda Bencic!
A look at Alexandrova’s profile reveals she played 259 times on clay. She won 163 (62.9%) of those matches, but her only tournament wins came at lowly grades in Wiesbaden ($25K) and Prague ($10K). Since winning those 2013 & 2014 tournaments, she’s been a beaten finalist on five occasions!
At the time of writing, Alexandrova is just two places below her career-high rank of 16. Furthermore, she ended the last clay season on 13/5, with the highlight being a semi-final in Madrid.
On three previous visits to Stuttgart, Alexandrova won 3 of her six matches. However, while she reached the QF in 2021, her limitations were exposed (6/1 6/4) by Simona Halep!
As for Donna Vekic, she struggled through 2020 and 2021. While the first part of 2022 went the same way, the Croatian came good in October.
In San Diego, Vekic won 6 matches on her way to the final. Moreover, she beat top a number of players, namely Aryna Sabalenka, Daniella Collins, Karolina Pliskova, and Maria Sakkari.
While Vekic is just 54.2% on this surface, she’s a former quarter-finalist in Stuttgart. Also, she’s beaten many renowned clay players, including Suarez Navarro, Kasatkina, Bencic (French Open), and Potapova.
To summarise – Vekic is back in business! Taking time between tournaments is helping, and winning this year’s at Monterrey will boost her confidence. The thing with Alexandrova is she often beats herself, and it’s those Gremlins that will make her vulnerable!
