CORI GAUFF vs LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA
The return to Washington is suiting Liudmila Samsonova. During the week, the 24-year-old beat all of Danielle Collins, Sorana Cirstea, and Marta Kostyuk in straight sets!
From what we have been watching, Samsonova is hitting & serving well. By that we mean she’s not been overcooking her shots, or giving unnecessary points away!
Following a slow start to the campaign, Liudmila seems to have her confidence back. The question remaining is can she raise her game again while staying consistent?
Samsonova’s last-round opponent offered a like-for-like game, but that won’t be the case with Cori Gauff. The 19-year-old is very different in her style, and this match will be decided on who executes best.
For the record, Gauff leads the head-to-head 2-0. However, those two qualifiers came on different surfaces, and both needed three sets.
Skipping the doubles is helping the American focus, and she comes into this on the back of two easy wins. While the first one against Haley Baptiste would have been expected, disposing of Belinda Bencic 6/2 6/1 was more impressive!
To cut a long story short, we see this more as a 50/50 type of match. While both players can lose focus, Samsonova is the type of player who grows into tournaments. Finally, the Russian ticks the C&D box, and that’s got to be worth something!
