WTA WIMBLEDON: FOURTH-ROUND PREVIEW & PICK

ELINA SVITOLINA vs XINYU WANG

Xinyu Wang needed three sets to defeat Viktoriya Tomova, Jessica Pegula, and Harriet Dart. Despite winning the third set of all three matches comfortably, Wang tends to experience lapses in her play.

Back in 2018, Wang reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon Juniors, where she defeated current quarter-finalist Lulu Sun and Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Only the now world number one, Iga Swiatek, prevented her from reaching the final.

Wang has won two-thirds of her matches on grass, although most of these victories came in lower-grade tournaments or qualifying rounds. Before this tournament, her best result on this surface was reaching the second round in Berlin.

In her recent match against Dart, Wang was made to work hard by an average opponent. Moreover, despite winning she served five double faults and had a -15 differential in winners versus unforced errors.

On the other hand, Elina Svitolina has won her three matches against Magda Linette, Jule Niemeier, and Ons Jabeur. While she needed three sets to defeat Linette, she has since beaten Niemeier and Jabeur in straight sets.

Last year’s semi-finalist, Svitolina, has been improving with each round. Her victory over the two-time finalist Jabeur was more comfortable than the scoreline suggested, finishing the match in 1 hour and 20 minutes with a +8 differential and only 12 unforced errors.

When Svitolina made the semi-final last year, she had only been back on the circuit for three months. Considering this, the working mother has shown significant improvement and is now a strong contender for the title.

In summary, although rain delays could pose a problem, Svitolina is fully in the zone. It is hard to envision Wang disrupting her momentum.
