In qualifying, Anna-Lena Friedsam took out Olga Danilovic and Dayana Yastremska. However, she’s meeting a player who won their only meeting, and we believe she’s up against it!
Friedsam’s style of play is defending from the baseline, and she’s at her best on slow courts. In that aspect, Miami is a bit slower than most hard courts. However, the ball does bounce a bit higher, and that counts against a flat-hitter like Anna-Lena.
While the 29-year-old fought hard to beat Yastremska, the Ukrainian will be disappointed with her effort. To cut a long story short, Freidsam was relying on her opponent to make unforced errors, and she did!
We believe it is fair to suggest that Friedsam has clear limitations. While she’s in better physical shape now, there is a feeling of predictability when she takes to court!
As for Xinyu Wang, she starts this tournament with a career-high rank of 61. The 21-year-old is 13/9 this year, and she made it to a semi-final in Hua Hin.
At her most recent tournament in Indian Wells, the Chinese player beat both Elise Mertens and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets. And, while she was stopped in the 3rd round by Barbora Krejcikova, that match needed all three sets.
If anything, the sprightly Wang should be even better suited by these courts in Miami. While the challenge will be on execution, she’s particularly effective with her break points.
