YULIA PUTINTSEVA vs CAROLINE GARCIA – PREVIEW

WTA MADRID – 2nd ROUND

Yulia Putintseva leads the head-to-head 3-1, but the last of those meetings was back in 2014. Suffice to say, we shouldn’t give much relevance to matches played 9 years ago!

As it stands, Caroline Garcia started the week at rank number 5. Following a number of years in the WTA ranking wilderness, the French player bounced back with a fantastic 2022!

For the record, it wasn’t until the 2nd part of last year that Caro started to peak. Her comeback started with a WTA250 tournament win in Bad Homburg and there was better to come.

The 29-year-old went on to win another WTA250 in Warsaw and then came the big breakthrough in Cincinnati. Despite having to qualify, Garcia won her 8 matches to land the $2.5M prize. After reaching the semi-final of the US Open, the icing on the cake was winning the Forth Worth WTA tour final!

Meanwhile, Caroline is 20/9 in 2023, and she reached the finals of Lyon and Monterrey. However, she was beaten in both by lower-ranked players Alycia Parks (54) and Donna Vekic (23).

For the most part, Garcia had a fair start to the season. Nevertheless, she’s yet to reach the level of last year, and she’s up against a very capable player today!

Putintseva impressed us by beating Claire Liu! The 28 years pulled off some exquisite shots, and she held her nerve to win the big points. PS. While Liu wouldn’t be on anyone’s list as a big player, she’s got a strong game on clay!

To cut a long story short, Yulia has all the attributes to play this surface. Her drop shot is a real tool, and she will know how to mix it up. If the player from Kazakhstan can keep her cool, she’s got what it takes to beat Garcia.
