YULIA PUTINTSEVA vs REBECCA MARINO - PICK

YULIA PUTINTSEVA vs REBECCA MARINO – PICK

WTA MIAMI

This is a first-time meeting between 28-year-old Yulia Putintseva (43) and 32-year-old Rebecca Marino (83). Incidentally, despite Marino being 4 years older than her opponent, she’s got fewer miles on the clock.

For the record, Putinseva recorded 405 wins from her 706 matches. Of those, the player from Kazakhstan won 195 from 362 hard-court matches. Yulia’s strike rate on this surface is 53.9%, which compares to an average of 57.4% and 64.3% on clay.

On the back of this season’s 7/8 (win/loss), Putintseva’s rank dropped to 43 from a career-high of 27. Since then she made it to the third-round last year, she’s protecting points up to that stage of the tournament.

Since the start of the year, Putintseva beat Petra Martic (Dubai), Bianca Andreescu (Abu Dhabi), and Sorana Cirstea (Melbourne). Six of her defeats came against higher-ranked players, while the other two were against Heather Watson and Anna Blinkova.

For the most part, Yulia has mixed form in Miami! In fact, the furthest she made it was to the 4th round in 2019. On the other hand, she was beaten in the first round on four of her seven visits.

Meanwhile, between 2013 and 2018, Marino took 5 years out of the game. The Canadian also missed out on the whole of 2020, and since returning she’s 82/53. At her best, Rebecca made it to a career-high rank of 38, and she enters this tournament on an improved 83.

Following last year’s impressive 49/24, Marino made it back into the top 100 for the first time since 2012. Over the past year, she’s beaten the likes of Leylah Fernandez, Lin Zhu, Anna Kalinskaya, and Marie Bouzkova.

To cut a long story short, at these odds we are diving in on the Canadian. She’s been preparing well, and winning three matches in Doha will give her a big confidence boost.
