Today’s Goodwood Previews & Betting Tips

GOODWOOD 14:40 – DARKNESS (13/2)

I’m a bit shocked to see STORM STAR at odds of 9/4, somebody must know something I don’t know. While the Andrew Balding trained 5 year old is on a fair handicap mark, his current form isn’t good enough!

JIMMY SPEAKING needs a good deal further than one mile, and that’s especially the case at an easy track like Goodwood. At his best, TWO TEMPTING would have a chance. However, while I wouldn’t put anyone off taking the 12/1, he needs to improve plenty on recent efforts!

The first challenge for William Buick is getting TRIBAL CHIEF out of the stalls. This habitual slow starter would have a big chance if consenting to his jockey, but odds of 7/2 are uninteresting!

I want to chance David O’Meara trained DARKNESS. The 8 year old is racing off 3 pounds lower than his last winning mark, and he comes into this on the back of a perfectly solid 3/11 at Haydock. Stepping back up to a mile will suit Saffie Osborne’s mount, and he’s already proven himself over this course and distance. The 8 times winner is more than capable, and at these odds he’s great betting value!

GOODWOOD 15:15 – BOILING POINT (7/2)

The form of Julia Camacho’s stable is a bit of a worry, and it’s enough to put me off last years winner NAQEEB. In any case, the 6 year old gelding is 4 pounds higher than when he won that race, and the ground will be riding faster today!

For a 6 year old, LION’S PRIDE hasn’t done much racing. When last seen the gelding finished a long last of 6 to SANTORINI STAR, although that was back in May and the Gosdens have had time to put things right. Since the son of ROARING LION goes well fresh, he’s one with a chance!

Considering he’s the lowest rated runner in the field, it’s surprising to see that the bookmakers have RESPOND as the clear favourite. While the 4 year old has been progressive in the not too distant past, he might have reached his maximum potential!

I’m with Karl Burke trained BOILING POINT, a 5 year old who’s taking a big step down in class and moving back up in distance. While the entire is worse off with NAQEEB on early season form, he’s held his form better than most. With the Burke stable in great form, Sam James could be on the winner!

GOODWOOD 15:50 – TIKKA (7/2)

I think my computer has been hacked, I’m seeing odds of 9/2 about 86-rated exposed 2-year-old ZIGAZIG AH on my screen. With all due respect, at this level those odds are an insult to everyone’s intelligence!

While CORAL COVE is rated another 5 points lower at 81, at least she has the potential to improve. 97-rated EABHA is an obvious one, but he is giving 6 pounds to impressive debut winner TIKKA.

The way the Fanshawe trained daughter travelled through the race to win at Kempton was highly taking. She’s clearly got a high cruising speed, and she won that day despite running green and having raced freely. Since I would already rate her the equivalent of EABHA, the improvement factor is a massive incentive to call this bet!
