UTTOXETER SPECIAL: 3 NATIONAL HUNT PREVIEWS & PICKS FOR FREE
The National Hunt season is building serious momentum, and we have three free jump racing selections for you today at Uttoxeter!
From calculating true handicap ratings to spotting horses poised to capitalise on dropped marks, we’ve broken down the card to find the best value on today’s program.
Let’s get straight into today’s previews and picks!
14:36 – CURRENT EDITION (9/4)
On his hurdling debut, SYTADEL chased home comfortable winner LOCK STOCK by 5 lengths. The winner followed up in a handicap off a mark of 116, suggesting the handicapper would initially have rated the Skelton runner around 108. However, given how that form was subsequently enhanced, I’d settle on a revised rating closer to 112.
Before getting bogged down in numbers, I have two major issues with the 4-year-old: firstly, the Skelton yard has been running below par of late; secondly, this horse was sent off at 35/1 when winning a French bumper. Call me a sceptic, but I can’t see any compelling reason to back him at these prices today.
Since last seen, LARZAC has left Willie Mullins to join Faye Bramley. His former trainer pitched him into two Grade 1 contests, in which he was well beaten—his only decent effort for the Irish maestro being a 4th of 19 in a Cork handicap, beaten 7.25 lengths. The 5-year-old starts his UK career off a mark of 124, making him the one to beat on paper if the change of scenery sparks improvement.
However, I want to chance CURRENT EDITION, who was only just touched off by a nose on his hurdling debut by the 120-rated JIMBO SPORT. The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained 5-year-old pulled 10 lengths clear of the third that day and clearly possesses plenty of engine. Coming from a yard in form is enough to assure me he will be fully fit and ready to go after a 188-day break!

15:15 – ROGER POL (4/1)
MISS GOLDFIRE is running consistently well and was only just touched off over course and distance last time out. Unfortunately, the handicapper reacted by bumping her up another 3lb, meaning she sits 11lb above her highest winning mark!
The grey gelding DIVILABOTHER won 4 of his last 6 races, soaring from a mark of 102 up to 127 in the process. While the 8-year-old ran a respectable 5th last time out, the handicapper appears to have caught up with him for now.
JUBILANT won comfortably at Plumpton on his latest start, for which he was raised 5lb. The James Owen-trained 5-year-old remains 2lb lower over hurdles compared to fences, suggesting he enters calculations.
PIKE ROAD ticks two boxes: he’s a course-and-distance winner and he continues to slide down the weights, which makes him dangerous if bouncing back to form. That said, his recent form figures represent a significant negative.
When last seen, ROGER POL was beaten 3.25 lengths by ERNEST GREY. The handicapper has since adjusted their marks, meaning ROGER POL now enjoys a 4lb weight pull with that rival. On top of that, the Jamie Snowden-trained 8-year-old saves his very best performances for this track and sits 4lb below his last winning mark. That recent run hinted at a return to form, and today’s conditions look spot on!

16:56 – FANE COURT (11/4)
This might only be a low-grade Class 5 chase, but there is plenty of logic behind this selection.
Early favourite JO ARENGEOT BEY AA is a course-and-distance winner. Back in May, the 7-year-old recorded his sole success under rules off a mark of 76 under today’s jockey Gavin Sheehan. Since undergoing wind surgery, the Donald McCain-trained grey has placed in three races off similar marks. To cut a long story short, he could win simply by process of elimination, but I’m not expecting any sudden progression and another placing looks his most likely outcome.
BETTER OFF ALONE is probably the best horse in the race, but he is heavily burdened by top weight. While Freddie Keighley claims a handy 5lb, that was also the case when he plodded on into 3rd at Worcester last time. In a small field, he looks vulnerable.
I’m siding with point-to-point winner FANE COURT, who returns to fences off an attractive mark of just 75. While he disappointed on his sole chase start to date, the larger obstacles are a far more natural fit for the D.J. Jeffreys-trained 8-year-old. He arrives in solid shape, races off a 5lb lower mark in this sphere, and Lewis Stones’ 3lb claim further aids the cause—along with receiving 9lb and 21lb respectively from the market leaders!
