While it took a while, Alycia Parks is in full swing. For the record, the big-hitting American arrives here on the back of winning Lyon.
At that tournament, Parks made heavy weather of beating her first opponent Julia Grabher. However, in the next round, she showed battling qualities to come from a set behind and beat Petra Martic. The 22-year-old went on to win her next three matches in straight sets, with Kovinic, Zanevska, and Garcia becoming victims.
If we go back to December 2022, Parks did manage to win back-to-back tournaments in Andorra and Angers. Also, since the start of the last year, Parks is 19/2 on this surface.
Despite loads of positives, we believe the American is up against it here. In fact, we believe she played last week’s opponents at the right time. Moreover, Anhelina Kalinina is going to be a bigger challenge.
The Ukrainian is long established in the top 50, and she started this week on a career-high rank of 31. We should also point to the fact that Kalinina won over 70% of her indoor matches, including 13/3 in 2022.
Meanwhile, the 26-year-old is 6-3 this season, and one of her wins was against Petra Kvitova. When last seen on an indoor hard court, Kalinia won Limoges. That tournament was only two months ago, so she won’t have forgotten how to play on this surface!
In summary, Kalinina is the more established player. She arrives here fresh and will have been well prepared. Whichever way we look at it, Parks is going to be feeling the effects of last week and consequently, she’s vulnerable.
