Two teams who are 2nd and 3rd placed in the League will be going head to head in this 2nd-round cup tie. For the record, the reverse leg ended 1-0 in favor of the host’s Royale Union. To cut a long story short, there were only two shots on goal in that match, and Nieuwkoop scored an 8th-minute winner.
In that last fixture, both managers sent out the best XI. In fact, Antwerp coach Mark Van Bommel made just one change to the team and then played Club Brugge. As for Geraerts’, the Union coach used the same team which had won the previous league game in Charleroi.
These clubs have met twice in this season’s Jupiler League, and on both occasions, the home side won. For those interested, Union where 4-2 winners at home, whereas Antwerp ended 2-0 winners at the Bosuilstadion.
With just 7 normal season League matches remaining, it looks certain that both clubs are heading into the championship group. However, Union comes into this match on the back of losing their last two games. At the weekend, the visitors were on the end of a 4-2 beating in Westerlo. Previously, Union lost another match by the same scoreline to St Liege, and that match was played at home.
Despite having a Bunch of player injuries to deal win, Antwerp is unbeaten in their last four games. While the hosts could only draw to Leuven at the weekend, before that they had beaten Eupen and Genk (0-1). Incidentally, the latter team is the league leader.
While Antwerp will need to take control of the game, it’s a good time to be playing Union. After all, the visitors conceded 8 goals in their last two games, and Antwerp is a better team than both Westerlo and St Liege. We are taking The Great Old to win the game and hopefully make the final.
