It’s good to see Daria Saville back in business. The Australian used to be a regular in the top 25 before injuries stopped her career.
Dasha didn’t start playing again until June, so it is fair to suggest that she needed a few matches to blow away the cobwebs. In fact, on pre-tournament form the 29-year-old had something to prove, but five wins in Hamburg suggest she’s on the right track!
Saville comes into this match on the back of beating two local players, namely Tamara Korpatsch and Jule Niemeier. Those wins along with her 6/0 7/6 against Jasmine Paolini were all in straight sets.
At the right level, Arantxa Rus is a tough cookie. Furthermore, despite her being 32 years of age, the Dutch player worked her way up to a new career-high rank of 52, and a win today would take her into the top 50!
However, as we said, it’s all about the level with Rus. While she’s excellent at punishing lesser players, she’s not got a particularly good record against those with higher ranks. And, while that doesn’t apply to Dasha, bear in mind her past achievements and her form this week!
