ARYNA SABALENKA vs DONNA VEKIC - PICK

ARYNA SABALENKA vs DONNA VEKIC – PICK

WTA AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Here is an interesting statistic, Donna Vekic leads the head-to-head 5-1. The last time they met was in October (2022) when the Croatian beat her opponent in the QF of San Diego. For the record, the only time Sabalenka won (August 2019) was in the semi-final of San Jose. Other than that, Vekic won twice in Saint Petersburg, Cincinnati, and the Olympics in Tokyo.

In the meantime, Sabalenka started the new season as she means it. As it stands, the 24-year-old is a perfect 8/0, and she hasn’t given up a single set.

The player from Belarus started her season by winning Adelaide. To take that tournament she needed to win 4 matches, with Liudmilla Samsonova and Marketa Vondrousova being amongst her victims.

Sabalenka skipped the previous tournament to prepare for the Australian Open. Her wins in the first week of Melbourne came against Tereza Martincova, Shelby Rogers, Elise Mertens, and Belinda Bencic.

Incidentally, Aryna needed just 5:22 court time, with her longest match being 1:28 against Bencic.

Vekic is also unbeaten (7/0) this year, and in the 2nd-round she comfortably got the better of Liudmilla Samsonova. Subsequently, the 26-year-old took just 1:05 (6/2 6/2) to win her match against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz. And, finally, Donna required three sets to see off Linda Fruhitova.

By the way, the longest match (2:59) for Vekic was in the first round against Olga Selekhmeteva. Since then she’s won her matches in 1:08, 1:04, and 2:09. Doing the maths, her total court time is 7:19.

In conclusion, Sabalenka has shown the best form to date. However, in WTA recent efforts don’t always count for much, and it is hard to get away from the 5-1 head-to-head. Vekic is growing in confidence, and she’s almost certainly got a puncher’s chance. Furthermore, that could be enhanced if Sabalenka falls off the rails, and that wouldn’t be a first!
