AYR RACES: BIGGER ODDS & GREAT BETTING VALUE

3:05 CARCACI CASTLE 11/2

Despite being trained in Ireland, BALLYCOOSE ran five of his nine races at this track. The S B R Crawford trained 7-year-old won two of those races, with the last of them being on the 2nd of January. However, that race was over 2M4.5F, whereas today’s is at the minimum (2M and 100 yards). While the son of MAHLER is proven on the ground, a 5-pound penalty is a negative factor.

One I did take a 2nd look at is the outsider of the party LEITRIM CHIEF. The James Ewart trained 8 year old is making the switch to fences following 4 runs over hurdles, and he should do better at this game. On a less positive note, Brian Hughes mount was a beaten favourite on two occasions, and he’s yet to prove he wants it!

With Lucinda Russell trained runners in good form, I can understand why her grey gelding TRAPRAIN LAW is the current favourite. The 6-year-old won one of his three chase races, and he should be competitive from a lowered mark of 128.

Last time out at Carlisle, GARDENER shrugged off a couple of sticky jumps to see off another of today’s contenders CARCACI CASTLE. Previously, Olly Murphy’s 7-year-old unshipped his jockey at Newcastle, but before that, he had won another chase in Southwell. For the most part, he’s proving to be a better chaser than he was a hurdler, and he should be better suited to racing on this left-handed track.

Nevertheless, I want to take him on with last time runner-up. As for the reasons, one of them is the 8-year-old is two pounds better off for half a length. My other grounds include, he should have learned from that experience (first chase), and he won his two hurdles on a left-handed track. Finally, he’s higher odds than GARDENER, and consequently a great value bet!
