BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA vs BIANCA ANDREESCU
WTA US OPEN
These players met in 2016, and Beatriz Haddad Maia was the person to progress from that 2nd round match in Waco! Suffice it to say, a lot of water passed under the bridge since then.
After winning the 2019 U.S. Open, Bianca Vanessa Andreescu reached a career-high rank of 4. Furthermore, in 2019, the now 22-year-old went 48/8 and won 4 tournaments.
At her peak, Andreescu was the real deal! In fact, Martina Navratilova said she had the shot variety of Martina Hingis, but with more power.
Unfortunately, Bianca missed all of 2020 with an injured knee. In 2021, the Canadian was stopped by a bout of Covid, and with it missed another chunk of the season. For the record, she ended last year at 17/13, and the highlight was making the final in Miami.
Andreescu made the QF of this year’s Rome and the final of Bad Homburg. However, she’s just 16/9 YTD, and recent defeats by Garcia, Rybakina and Zheng were disappointing. Finally, Bianca needed three sets to beat her first opponent Harmony Tan, which is hardly inspiring!
Meanwhile, Beatriz Haddad Maia arrived here with a new career-high rank of 15. While the Brazilian started with lower-level tournaments, her profile is that of a much-improved player.
For the record, the 26-year-old was 27/2 in 2020, and 77/25 last year. While her strike rate (45/17) dropped during the current season, that can be explained by playing at a higher level.
Haddad Maia came good by winning this year’s Saint Malo, Nottingham and Birmingham, and there was better to come! Making the recent final of Toronto proved that the Brazilian was able to compete at the top end!!
In the first round here, Haddad Maia beat Ana Konjuh 6/0 6/0. Suffice to say, she’s in rude health and our betting confidence is high!
