At last years Monterrey, Beatriz Haddad Maia beat Marie Bouzkova (4/6 6/4 7/6). The Brazilian made it to the semi-final of that tournament before being stopped by Leylah Fernandez.
Haddad Maia failed to shine in her next four tournaments, things changed when she won Saint-Malo. In fact, the now 26-year-old had a great second half of the season.
For the record, Beatriz went on to win back-to-back grass tournaments in Nottingham and Birmingham. And, if we wind the clock forwards to August, she made the final of the Canadian Classic.
As it stands, Haddad Maia is on a career-high rank of 14. While she’s good on all surfaces, her highest win rate (68.6%) is on the hard court! However, she arrives here on the back of losing her last two matches to Badosa and Parrizas-Diaz.
Marie Bouzkova was another player to make a breakthrough in 2022. In addition to reaching a career-high rank of 24, the Czech player won 42 of her 58 matches. Moreover, the 24-year-old won 75% of her hard-court matches and landed the trophy in Prague.
The highlight of Bouzkova’s year was making it to the quarter-final of Wimbledon, and a Semi-final in Guadalajara. Incidentally, that end-of-season tournament carried $2.5M in prize money.
While Bouzkova lost that match to Haddad Maia, she had an excuse. The Czech player arrived at that tournament on the back of a busy schedule, including playing in the final of a WTA250 Guadalajara. As such, she hadn’t had time to recover, whereas today she’s going to be fresh!
