ENGLAND PREMIER LEAGUE

Brighton is proof that using sports modelling (data) to build a football club is the way to go! Although working with a low budget, Tony ‘’Lizzard’’ Bloom and his manager Graham Potters are getting the best out of the Seagulls.

As it stands, Brighton took 7 points from three games to date. In the first round, Potters men exposed (1-2) Manchester United. Subsequently, the Seagulls drew with a much improved Newcastle, and in the last round, they won (0-2) in West Ham.

Despite cashing-in €81.5M from player trades, Brighton assembled a very competitive squad. In last week’s match, the latest signing Pervis Estupinan came from the bench on 63 minutes. Now that the Ecuadorian had time to adapt, he’s one we would expect to start. If that is the case, Leonardo Trossard will be given the license to play higher up the field.

With regard to team news, the hosts are missing just two players. Jakub Moder is still recovering from a cruciate ligament rupture, and he’s likely to miss the next 2-3 months. Jeremy Sarmiento is the other absentee!

Meanwhile, Leeds were fortunate not to be relegated at the end of the last season. In fact, the Peacocks would have gone down if Burnley hadn’t lost on the final day! Nevertheless, after the appointment of Jesse Marsch, the Whites started to improve, and under the American’s guidance, that trend continued into the new season.

The visitors took 7 points from three games, and last week’s 3-0 against Chelsea was the icing on the cake. In that match, Leeds did a lot more running than their opponent, and they were rewarded with goals.

However, we have to point at the xG from that match coming back at 1.70 to 1.80. In short, the scoreline was excessive, and Leeds benefitted from goalkeeping mistakes.

According to March’s press interview, Leeds is without Junior Firpo, Mateusz, Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas. All four players will need time to recover, and they won’t be available over the coming weeks. One doubt is Patrick Bamford, albeit the coach said he’s training again and should be ready in time!

Whatever the Leeds injury situation, Marsch can call on the same XI players which beat Chelsea.

In summary, Leeds are much improved, it’s just that they are playing the best-organised team in the league. The Seagulls will have a plan, and they should be able to find the openings and give the whites a reality check.
