Caroline Garcia vs Petra Martic – WTA Cincinatti – Round one. Since we are busy updating our Sports-modelling data, we don’t plan on adding many free tips this week. Here is one for today:
CAROLINE GARCIA vs PETRA MARTIC
Caroline Garcia is working her way back up the ranking charts. In late May, the former number 4 had dropped to her lowest rank (79) since 2014. Following tournament wins in Bad Homburg and London she shot back up to rank 35.
As it stands, the 28-year-old is 30/16 YTD. However, she’s just 6/8 on hard court, and her 4-year record on this surface is 34-44. Furthermore, Garcia doesn’t have the best of records in Cincinnati, and her two qualifying wins needed three sets.
For the record, the French player gave up a set to bother Andrea Petkovic and Diane Parry. The furthest she’s ever made it at this tournament is round 3, and she failed to make it past round one on 5 occasions.
Meanwhile, Petra Martic is another to have recovered ranking points. The 31-year-old reached a career-high rank of 14 in 2020, but in March this year, she had dropped to 86.
The Croatian started her comeback with a QF at Indian Wells. At that tournament, she beat all of Bondar, Zidansek, Raducanu and Samsonova before losing to Simona Halep.
On the clay courts of Rome, Martic beat the number two ranked player Anett Kontaveit. She’s also beaten Muchova, Rogers, Pegula, Bencic and today’s opponent. In fact, Martic went on to win Lausanne, and she also made the 4th round of Wimbledon!
To make a long story short, Martic is back at the top of her game. While she lost a recent qualifying match to Kalinina, it was never going to matter because she knew a LL pass was waiting. Moreover, in the first round, she had already beaten Yastremska, and that form is worth respect.
No hesitation, Martic can beat Caro for the 2nd time this year!
