In last week’s Belgium Super cup final, Club Brugge made hard work out of beating (1-0) Gent. Nevertheless, they got the job done, and new boss Carl Hoefkens will be happy with the result.

The reigning Champions look well prepared for the coming season, and more importantly the owners invested in new players. For the record, the Club cashed in €9.8M for Loïs Openda, but they spent that and more on incoming players.

On that note, left-back Bjorn Meijer arrived from FC Groningen for €6 million, while Casper Nielsen was acquired for €5.5M. The other cash transaction was Ferran Jutglà from Barca Atletico, albeit ‘’free transfer’’ Cyle Latin needs recognising. In our opinion, the former Besiktas winger is an interesting transfer and to get him for free is great. Other than that, Faitout Maouassa arrived on loan from Montpellier, and Youssouph Badji came from Charleroi.

As of today, Hoefkens is a 33-man squad, albeit the likes of Tajon Buchanan and Mats Rits are injured. The other players unavailable for today’s match are Antonio Nusa and Denis Odoi.

Meanwhile, Genk appointed former Mechelen boss Wouter Vranken as their new coach. At the time of writing, the Buffalo’s have 31 players on their books. However, it looks like star striker Wolves target Paul Onuachu will miss the season opener after picking up an injury.

The visitors will go into this game without Kristian Thorstvedt, he was recently sold to Sassuolo for €10 million. Furthermore, Theo Bongonda could be shipping out to Glasgow Rangers, and it’s not like the Genk owners are re-investing.

In brief, home advantage and a strengthened team are positives for the Blue & Black. Playing last week’s Super Cup wouldn’t have been wasted, and meeting a weakened opponent makes it easier.
