CORI GAUFF vs PAULA BADOSA GIBERT
Cori Gauff is in top form for this tournament. These tough conditions are clearly suiting the 18-year-old and beating Naomi Osaka (6/4 6/4) and Anhelina Kalinina (6/1 6/0) augers well.
What is good with the youngster is she’s comfortable on all surfaces. She doesn’t mind whether her opponent is attacking or defensive, and her game is built around adapting to the situation!
At this year’s Doha, Gauff easily (6/2 6/3) beat today’s opponent Paula Badosa Gibert. That was at the same stage of this match (3rd round), and since then she went on to make the final of the French Open.
While PBG is the higher-ranked player, her laboured effort against Elizabeth Mandlik suggests she’s off the pace. In fact, needing a third-set tie-break to beat a player ranked 240 is disappointing.
For the most part, Badosa Gibert isn’t at the same level as she was last season. Consequently, she’s only won one tournament in Sydney, and since then her rank dropped from 2 to 4.
Because of her on-court demeanour, we are often left thinking PBG isn’t the hardest of triers. However, her nonchalant manor is covered for her lack of kampfgeist, and as such we are not convinced about the 24-year-old.
In summary, Gauff has more natural talent. She’s in excellent form this week, whereas Badosa Gibert isn’t! Something is not right with the Spaniard, and that’s why this betting line is more than justified.
