DERBY BETTING VERDICT: WE ARE DOUBLING UP!

EPSOM 4:30 AMBIENTE FRIENDLY 15/2

A P O’Brien is convinced that his 2000 Guineas flop CITY OF TROY will be better prepared for today! As a two-year-old, the son of JUSTIFY made light work of winning his three races including the Dewhurst.

With a rating of 124, Ryan Moore’s mount could still be something special. Nevertheless, following that flop, he’s got something to prove, and the longer distance is an unknown factor. To cut a long story short, I prefer to look elsewhere.

The same trainer is saddling betting outsider EUPHORIC and the unbeaten LOS ANGELES. The pair met in a recent race at Leopardstown when LOS ANGELES came out on top by one length. If I had to bet one of the two at current odds, I would rather have the 33/1 about EUPHORIC.

While the impeccably bred MACDUFF hasn’t won any of his last three races, but he’s capable of improving for this longer distance. While the son of SEA THE STARS wouldn’t be my main bet, I can imagine myself covering with Ralph Beckett’s charge.

If the ground is soft the chance of ANCIENT WISDOM would improve. However, reports from the track suggest it’s drying and most likely to be ‘’good’’ at post time. On a more upbeat note, Charlie Appleby’s son of DUBAWI will stay the distance.

It would be nice to see a lesser-known trainer grab the limelight, and Roger Teal must have a chance with his DANCING GEMINI. Dylan Browne McMonagle’s mount had a good prep race, and he’s the 3rd highest-rated in the race. The doubt with this fella is the longer distance, and we will only know the answer following the race.

The one that ticks all the boxes is AMBIENTE FRIENDLY. While the owners decided to switch jockeys from Callum Shepherd to Robert Havlin, I can understand why! After all, Havlin rides the track well, and he should be able to get the colt better settled than his most recent jockey.

AMBIENTE FRIENDLY comes into this on the back of an impressive win at Lingfield. The son on GLENEAGLES showed an impressive turn-of-foot in that derby trail, and he handles an undulating track. Since he’s a strong travelling type with a good draw, we expect the jockey to ride the James Fanshawe prominently.

In summary, the race should be run to suit the selection. He likes the ground, and we know he gets the distance. The contours of Epsom won’t be a problem, so the only question remaining is will he be good enough? While I try to avoid ‘’confirmation bias’’, the data says we should get sick in!
