FANTASTIC RACING – BIG BET DAY
YORK 1:50 JIMI HENDRIX 9/2
NOSTRUM can improve further, but he will need to settle better if he’s going to get the extra furlong. Another issue I have with the son of KINGMAN, 3-year-olds have tended to struggle against older horses. Lastly, he’s short odds and he was beaten at 4/6 last time out!
When finishing 2nd in his last race at Haydock, EL DRAMA was having his first race for Karl Burke. In finishing an excellent 2nd to AL AASY, the son of LOPE DE VEGA showed improved form. In fact, he was only caught close home by the short-priced favorite.
However, that race was on soft ground and he seemed to be better suited to that surface. Also, dropping back in distance isn’t my idea of a good move!
For the record, over the past fortnight, Ralph Beckett had 17 winners from 54 runners. In fact, the Kimpton trainer had another 4 winners yesterday, and he clearly has his string in top form.
In this race, the stables runner is 5 times winner JIMI HENDRIX. Since first qualifying for a handicap mark, the 4-year-old progressed from a rating of 83 to 111. Followers of the NEW BAY gelding would have made a lot of money, and I believe they can collect again today!
After all, Rossa Ryan’s mount comes into this on the back of two excellent runs. The first of those was winning a 30-runner Ascot handicap by 2L. Subsequently, JIMI HENDRIX was 3rd of 8 in Ascot Group 2, with next-time winner MIGHTY ULYSSES 4.5L behind.
In summary, the 1M1F and faster ground are not breakers for the selection, but it will count against the other principals. With the stable in great form, we have every right to be optimistic.
