FIVE-POUNDS IN HAND – BEVERLEY
2:40 SILKY WILKIE 5/2
Despite APOLLO ONE coming into this on the back of running two big races, I’m surprised to see him at the head of the betting market. For the record, the gelding finished 2nd of 27 in big handicaps at Goodwood and Ascot.
While the son of EQUIANO is an admirable 5-year-old, he’s got something to find on the ratings. Also, this will be a more tactical race, and run at a very different track. To cut a long story short, I would rate him more of a 3/1 than a 2/1 shot!
Meanwhile, Clive Cox is running both KERDOS and TIS MARVELLOUS. The first mentioned is a 101-rated 3-year-old, while Luke Morris’s mount is a long-in-the-tooth 9-year-old. Suffice it to say, KERDOS should finish ahead of his stable companion, but I can’t imagine the 3-year-old beating the selection.
Consequently, I’m with course & distance winner SILKY WILKIE. According to the assessor, the four-year-old has 5 pounds and more in hand of the opposition. Furthermore, this 6-time winner will appreciate the ground and come into this on the back of an excellent 4/13 in a big prize handicap.
To cut a long story short, more of the same should be good enough!
