BELGIUM CONFERENCE LEAGUE PLAY-OFF

The team finishing fifth in the Championship Group will face the winner of the Conference League Group. The winner of this match will earn a spot representing the Belgian Jupiler League in next season’s Europa Conference League.

At the end of the main season, these two teams both had 47 points. However, Genk advanced to the Championship Group due to a superior goal difference, finishing with +20 compared to Gent’s +15. Normally, Jupiler League positions are decided based on head-to-head results, but this criterion couldn’t be applied because both matches ended in draws in regular-season encounters.

For the record, the two regular-season encounters ended in draws: 2-2 in Genk and 1-1 in the reverse fixture. Both matches took place towards the end of 2023, and the data from both suggest that a point apiece was a fair outcome. During the regular season, Genk ranked as the 9th-best home team with 24 points, while Gent was the 8th-best away team with 20 points. However, Genk finished with a +11 goal difference, whereas Gent had a -1 goal difference.

Genk went on to play ten more matches in the Championship Group, securing 10 points (3 wins, 1 draw) from their first four games. However, they lost five of their remaining six matches, including a defeat on the last day against Royale Union (2-0), which resulted in them missing out on Europa League qualification.

Additionally, former coach Wouter Vrancken’s announcement of his desire to leave the club led to his dismissal with four games remaining. Caretaker manager Domenico Olivieri took over, and under his guidance, Genk has a record of 1 win and 3 losses.

In the meantime, Gent went on to win and lose two of their Conference Group matches. Hein Vanhaezebrouck’s finished with 9 points better than next best Mechelen, thus suggesting they were a class above the opposition.

Although the Buffalos didn’t need any points from their last two matches, they still managed to defeat St. Liege (1-4) and St. Truiden (2-0). Overall, the visitors finished the season on a high note, successfully coping with the absence of several injured players.

If Gent can maintain this level of play, they will beat a disappointing Smurfs!
