5:05 AIMERIC 9/4 (5/2 Exchanges)

I understand why Roger Varian has entered THREE PRIESTS in this Listed race. Despite the lightly raced mare needing to improve by 8 to 16 pounds compared to the others, there are only five runners. From a breeding value perspective, her connections are hoping to get her listed placed.

Godolphin has two runners, with Saeed bin Suroor responsible for the second-string runner PASSION AND GLORY. This 8-year-old has won two Listed Class races and landed a Group 3 over this course and distance in July 2023. However, Oisin Murphy’s mount falls a bit short on the ratings and he’s thoroughly exposed.

In 2022, DEAUVILLE LEGEND progressed to a rating of 116. The John Ferguson-trained gelding won the Great Voltigeur at York and finished 4th out of 22 in the Melbourne Cup. Since then, the SEA THE STARS son has raced only four times in 19 months, with his recent 4th out of 6 at Chester suggesting he’s struggling to regain his best form.

KING OF CONQUEST has won 5 of his 16 races, including a Listed race at this track over 10 furlongs. Charlie Appleby’s charge is equally adept at this longer distance, coming into this race on the back of a “nose” second in a Group 3 at Newbury, which was a career-best effort. William Buick’s mount is the early favourite and the one to beat.

As for my selection, it has to be the improving 5-year-old AIMERIC. The son of FRANKEL has won 5 of his 11 races, including a strong handicap last time out. At Lingfield, James Doyle’s mount always looked like the winner, and once asked to quicken, he stamped his authority on the race.

Despite this being a 5-runner race, I expect it to be run at a proper pace. Roger Varian’s charge will be suited by such a pace, allowing him to utilize his good turn of foot to secure a win!
