GROUP CLASS IN A HANDICAP

GOODWOOD 1:50 SECRET STATE 11/4 (3/1 Exchanges)

While I’m reluctant to take short odds in a big handicap, I can’t see this one getting beat. I will come on to my idea of the winner in a minute, but first, let us consider the opposition.

Charles Hills is struggling for winners, and it’s hard to imagine his INVERNESS getting the stable back on track. In short, this fella needs further than this, and a drop in class would be a good idea.

Of those in double betting figures, the one I like most is SURREY MIST. The grey will have the assistance of Hollie Doyle today, and he’s been holding himself in good races. Moreover, the track and distance will suit him best, and the big field should guarantee the good pace he requires.

In my opinion, MANDOBI is in the hands of the handicapper, and his recent effort leaves him something to find.

Stablemate SOULCOMBE won his last race for Cieren Fallon, and he gets into this with a low weight. However, while that might sound tempting, the son of FRANKEL is moving up from class four to class two.

I must admit to struggling with the idea of LUMINOUS LIGHT being the third favourite because I would have him 6th.

Meanwhile, for the winner, I won’t be looking beyond SECRET STATE. I said it before he won his last race, the son of DUBAWI is better than a handicapper. While he only just scraped home at Ascot, that’s because he ran green once he got to the front.

For the record, the horse he beat that day DEAUVILLE LEGEND won a Group 3 last time out and he’s now rated 19 pounds higher. With further improvement assured, and a proven ability to handle any ground we don’t feel the need to look further.
