PONTEFRACT 7:50  ELEGANT ERIN 7/2

In form trainer George Scott is saddling ROCKET RODNEY. The winner of a listed race comes into this on the back of finishing 2nd at Doncaster. For the record, he gets to race off the same mark today, and he’s 9 pounds lower than his career-high rating. However, my big concern is both topweight, especially since the ground is going to be more testing.

COPPER KNIGHT won his last race and he’s only 4 pounds higher today. Since he’s due to go up 6 pounds in the future, Tim Easterby’s gelding is 2 pounds well-in. The downside is switching to Pontefract because he’s much better at York and other easy courses.

Both PILLOW TALK and MATTICE make little appeal. While both have the potential to do better, neither is running well enough to be considered.

As for RUSSETT GOLD, he comes into this on the back of winning a Redcar sprint. While that is a very different type of track compared to Pontefract, he’s also won over this CD. To cut a long story short, Roger Varian’s 3-year-old is entitled to be competitive again!

Nevertheless, with a 5-pound penalty, I want to take him on with ELEGANT ERIN. The Paul Midgley-trained mare won 4 of her last nine races at Beverley, Pontefract and Carlisle. All three tracks are known for being stiff, so getting to race back at Pontefract is a massive incentive!

The 6-year-old is running into form, and Graham Lee will only have 6 others to pass. In conclusion, despite being a pound wrong at the weights, everything points to a big run from this talented mare.
