KATIE SWAN vs NAO HIBINO – PICK
Both players have peaked this week. In the case of Nao Hibino, the Japanese player won her four matches in straight sets. Incidentally, two of those wins came in qualifying, beating players ranked 822 and 277.
In the main round proper, Hibino’s first win (6/0 6/4) was against 255-ranked Jana Fett. While Hibino could do no more than win, her opponent made it easy with 9 double faults!
On Wednesday, the 27-year-old won her match against the higher-ranked Qiang Wang. However, the Chinese player looked like a shadow of her old self (once ranked 12), and it was a messy match.
To make a long story short, Hibino has managed to stay focused and a reward is a place in the quarter-final. Nevertheless, despite the 27-year-old doing a good job, we don’t believe she should be the favourite for today’s match.
Her opponent is 23-year-old Katie Swan, and if anything the Brit has been even more impressive. In fact, Swan won both her matches in straight sets, and the one against Arianne Hartano ended 6/2 6/1.
Katie then followed up by getting the better of Anastasia Gasanova, who had previously beaten top seed, Alison Riske. Whichever way we look at it, that was a top effort against a capable opponent.
Swan arrived in Chennai on the back of winning a W60 in Lexington. In that tournament, she got the better of up-and-coming players Katrina Scott and Jodie Anna Burrage.
Furthermore, Swan will go into this match on the back of reaching a new career-high (143) rank. Considering she missed 3 months of the campaign through injury, it’s quite an achievement!
Nice odds! Must bet!
