While Marketa Vondrousova is yet to find her best form, we expect it to return sooner rather than later. After missing 7 months of the last season because of injury, the 23-year-old did at least manage to win a W100 in Shrewsbury.
Marketa won five matches this year, and 4 were of those were against high-level players. Incidentally, we are referring to Ekaterina Alexandrova, Ons Jabeur, Alison Riske, and Kaia Kanepi.
In the first round here, the Czech player had no issues in taking out Viktoriya Tomova. We could also point to her strike rate on indoor courts, which is a staggering 82.5%. For the record, all but 6 of those 52 wins were done and dusted in straight sets!!
At around this time last year, Vondrousova won 6-matches on the way to making the semi-final of Dubai. Finally, she’s beaten most of the top players on tour, and given a clear run she’s good enough to work her way to the top 10!
We bet on Rebeka Masarova in the last round, and she did us a favour by landing nice odds against Ekaterina Alexandrova. However, she needed 2:36 court time to finish the job and followed playing through two rounds of qualification.
After making the final of Auckland, Masarova broke into the top 100. She’s 12/3 on the year, and signs are she’s in for a good season. Nevertheless, we have to be real when betting, and the fact is she’s moving up in class today.
To cut a long story short, Vondrousova does have bigger fish to fry. Whether she is targeting this tournament remains to be seen, but if she is then it is hers for the taking!
