MARTA KOSTYUK vs JASMINE PAOLINI – PREVIEW
WTA CINCINNATI FIRST-ROUND
In the first round of qualification for last year’s Cincinnati, Marta Kostyuk easily disposed of Jasmine Paolini. In fact, the scoreline was 6/2 6/2 in favor of the Ukrainian player.
However, two months later in Cluj, it was Paolini who got revenge in a three-set duel. For the record, the Italian went on to reach the final of that tournament.
Following a slow start to the campaign, Jasmine has started to come good. In fact, in May she won a clay tournament in Florence & two weeks later reached the final of Makarska.
Subsequently, the 27-year-old reached another final in Palermo and the 3rd round of last week’s Montreal. As for Cincinnati, Paolini came through qualifying by beating Rebeka Masarova and Maria Camila Osorio Serrano.
A quick look at Paolini’s profile reveals she’s just one ranking place below her career high of 42. Her strike rate on Hard-court (55%) is below that of her Clay court (63.6%) endeavors. Nevertheless, on this surface, she’s beaten the likes of Donna Vekic, Elise Mertens, and Aryna Sabalenka.
Kostyuk is 22/16 this year, with her season highlight winning a WTA 250 in Austin. The 21-year-old started the campaign with a QF in Adelaide, and
she reached the QF of a recent tournament in Washington!
At last week’s tournament in Montreal, Kostyuk disappointingly lost her opening match to Qinwen Zheng. While Marta won the 2nd set, she was lethargic and never got going in the decider.
In summary, we had these odds closer together than the actual betting market. Jasmine has the advantage of playing two qualifications on these courts, and she won their last meeting.
PS – while some of our subscribers can’t bet round numbers, the most natural number for this game is +3. For those wanting a definite result, take the 2.5 (a bit more risk) of the more conservative line of 3.5.
