The 29-year-old is 27/7 this year, and from those, she’s 5/1 on clay! For the record, Pegula is on a career-high rank of three, and she was a finalist at last year’s tournament.
As for the surface, Pegula won 61.6% of her clay matches. In comparison, she averages a 62.1% win rate across all surfaces. In short, she’s capable on clay, albeit she was never able to win a tournament on this surface.
If we cut to the point, we are not convinced by Jess’s recent performances! Considering her lofty rank, she shouldn’t be losing to the likes of Krejcikova, Kvitova, and Bencic.
Furthermore, the American made hard work out of beating her first two opponents in Madrid. Both Marie Bouzkova and Magdalena Frech took her to tie breaks, and she only won the other sets by a single break! In any case, Pegula failed to cover the betting spread and that’s what we are anticipating today.
As for Martina Trevisan, she was a semi-finalist at last year’s French Open. Also, she won the WTA250 clay tournament in Rabat, in which she beat Claire Liu and Garbine Muguruza.
Other positive factors include Trevisan recently reaching a career-high rank of 20. She’s considerably better on clay (67.6%), and she won her two matches (here) in straight sets.
In conclusion, a player of Pegula’s caliber should be the betting favorite, but these odds are too short! Since Jess failed to cover the spread in either of her matches, that’s the way to go. Being able to get +5 games at positive odds is the carrot on the cake!
