The big-hitting Alycia Parks is starting to make a name for herself. For the record, following last year’s win in Andorra, the 22-year-old broke into the top 100 for the first time.
By making it to the semi-final here, Parks reached a new career-high rank of 72. A win today would take the American to rank 62, and taking the trophy would mean a rank of between 50 and 52.
At last year’s indoor tournaments, the American went 14/2. Four of her wins came against top players Karolina Pliskova, Maria Sakkari, Shuai Zhang, and Marketa Vondrousova. However, she did lose matches against Barbora Krejcikova and Caty McNally, and two of her wins this week needed three sets.
As for Maryna Zanevska, she too took a big leap in the rankings chart. In fact, the 29-year-old went up 16 places to rank 77. On that note, if she makes it through this round her new rank is 67. Whereas, winning the whole tournament would take Maryna to a career-high rank of 54.
Zanevska easily brushed aside the challenges of her first two opponents, namely, Shuai Zhang and Delma Galfi. While she needed three sets to progress past yesterday’s opponent Anastasia Potapova, she won the 2nd & 3rd 6/1 6/2.
The key to beating Parks is to stop the Americans from taking control of the match. Since Zanevska is particularly good at returning, we expect her to neutralize her opponent’s powerful serve. While Parks hit 24 Aces this week, she also made 18 double faults.
To cut a long story short, we can understand why the bookmakers are making Parks the betting favorite. Nevertheless, we believe Zanevska has the game to stop the youngster, and her tactical noose will win the match.
