PAULA BADOSA vs JELENA OSTAPENKO – PREVIEW
WTA ROME
After a topsy-turvy match, Paula Badosa made it past her last-round opponent Karolina Muchova. However, the match was a messy one, and Badosa benefitted from her opponent’s failure to focus.
While Badosa was the more consistent player, she still gave away too many free points. Furthermore, both players lacked the killer instinct, and the match was really tense.
We should also mention that the service game of both players didn’t cut much ice. Finally, the players were legless after 3:05 court time!
As for Jelena Ostapenko, she’s a law unto herself! On a good day, the Latvian can kick anyone’s ass, but the opposite is true when she’s having a bad one!
Nevertheless, at this tournament, Jelena is finding ways to win. In fact, while she had to battle hard in the early part of matches, it was easy in the end!
For the record, Ostapenko won her opener against Sorana Cirstea in straight sets. In her match against Barbora Krejcikova, Jelena turned a 1/5 first-set deficit into a 7/6 win. With her opponent having a mental meltdown, the second set ended on 6/0. Lastly, in the final game on Monday, she beat Daria Kasatkina 6/4 4/6 6/0.
To be analytical, the 2017 French Open winner is improving from match to match. Winning is giving the 25-year-old confidence, and she had plenty of time to recover.
Incidentally, Badosa leads the head-to-head 2-1, and she won their only meeting on clay. With that said, Ostapenko took revenge in St Petersburg and her record on this surface speaks for itself!
To cut a long story short, at these odds, we don’t need to look any further than Ostapenko.
