PETRA MARTIC vs LAURA SIEGEMUND – PREVIEW

WTA MADRID SECOND – ROUND

When they last met, sports psychologist Laura Siegemund knocked Petra Martic out of the French Open. However, that match was played in 2020, and the other meeting went to the Croatian.

For the record, Siegemund won 65.9% of her clay matches which compares to an overall average of 59.8%.

As for the current tournament, the 35-year-old won three matches to date. In qualifying, Siegemund beat Viktoria Hrencakova and Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. However, in the first-round proper, she required three sets to get past Nadia Podoroska.

In 2016, Siegemund made it to the 3rd round of this tournament, and in 2021 she reached the 2nd round. On her only other visit, she failed to qualify!

Meanwhile, Martic has a higher strike rate on clay compared to other surfaces. In fact, her win rate on the hard court is 53.1%, and that compares to 63.9% on this surface.

In 2019, Petra made it to the QF of this tournament by beating Garbine Muguruza, Donna Vekic, and Angie Kerber. And, in 2022, the 29-year-old won three of her matches before succumbing to Amanda Anisimova.

PS, Martic was forced to qualify for her last tournament in Madrid. In the meantime, her improved ranking got her a bye in round one!

Last season’s rise back up the ranking chart was partly down to winning 16/8 on clay! Also, winning Lausanne by beating Bencic and Garcia added to the Croatian’s credibility.

Despite losing in the first round of Stuttgart, we thought Martic played a good match against Anastasia Potapova. To cut a long story short, playing to the same level should be enough to take out Siegemund!
