WTA BIRMINGHAM

Back in 2019, Qiang Wang reached a career-high ranking of 12. Unfortunately, the next two seasons were disappointing, and her current rank is a lowly 146.

With regards to the current campaign, the 30-year-old started the season by making a Semi-Final in Guadalajara. In fact, she was 12/7 on hard court, and she listed Cori Gauff amongst her victims.

However, after qualifying for Istanbul, Wang lost in the first round to Sara Sorribes Tormo. While that result was half expected, the 6/3 6/2 scoreline was disappointing. Subsequently, the Chinese player was beaten in the first round of qualifying for Madrid. At the French Open, Jessica Pegula didn’t take long to get the upper hand. Most recently, Irina Radionova (Surbiton) and Beatriz Haddad-Maia (Nottingham) inflicted other defeats.

To make a long story short, Wang lost 5 of her last six matches. Incidentally, don’t read too much into that 3-setter against Haddad Maia, the Brazilian was just warming up for Nottingham!!

Meanwhile, Elena Gabriela Ruse is the higher-ranked (53) player. In 2019, she was a solid 7/2 on this surface. Moreover, she beat Golubic on her way to the QF of Nottingham. Also, the now 24-year-old was a semi-finalist at the Wimbledon juniors.

While the Romanian is just 12/11 this year, we have to point out that she’s had some tough draws. On a more upbeat note, Ruse beat the likes of Paolini, Tomljanovic, and Badosa Gibert!

In summary, Wang does have a game for grass, but these odds are exaggerating her chance. Finally, Ruse has beaten better players than her opponent, and she will be well prepared for this!
