ROMANIA vs UKRAINE: BETTING PREVIEW & PICK

ROMANIA vs UKRAINE: BETTING PREVIEW & PICK

Romania qualified for EURO 2024 in good style. The Tricolours finished five points above Switzerland to top Group I, ending the campaign unbeaten with 6 wins and 4 draws.

However, a closer analysis of Edward Iordanescu’s team reveals some good fortune in their campaign. Romania managed to secure four points against Switzerland, thanks in part to two late goals (89th and 91st minutes) in their away match, where they were largely outplayed. In that game, Switzerland’s expected goals (xG) were significantly higher (+2.1 goals). Additionally, the reverse fixture was more balanced than the 1-0 scoreline suggested.

In recent friendlies, Romania’s performance has been lacklustre. They drew home matches against Liechtenstein, Bulgaria, and Northern Ireland before losing 3-2 to Colombia in a neutral venue. Despite being heavy favourites for each of those games, they failed to impress, particularly against Liechtenstein, where they fell short of their 1.07 odds.

From a player valuation perspective, Romania’s squad is among the weakest in the tournament. Aside from centre-back Radu Dragusin (Tottenham) and goalkeeper Horatju Moldovan (Atletico Madrid’s reserve), most of the players are from lower-tier clubs.

On the other hand, Ukraine, coached by Sergiy Rebrov, faced the challenge of playing all home matches on neutral ground due to the ongoing war. Despite being drawn into a tough group with England and Italy, the Blue and Yellow finished third in Group C, level on points with Italy. They secured draws against both top teams and defeated Iceland in the playoffs to qualify.

Ukraine boasts a roster of recognized players, including Oleksandr Zinchenko (Arsenal) and Mykhaylo Mudryk (Chelsea), who are regulars at top Premier League clubs. Also, Artem Dovbyk and Viktor Tsygankov had excellent seasons with La Liga’s 3rd-placed Girona. Their squad features many other notable players, and they have enough cover in most positions.

In summary, Ukraine has a superior starting XI. Given the situation in their country, the Blue and Yellow are likely to be highly motivated. Anything less than a win would be a significant disappointment for both them & us!
