SARA SORRIBES TORMO vs CLAIRE LIU
While Sara Sorribes Tormo wins a higher percentage (67.4%) of matches on clay, switching to hard court isn’t an issue. For the record, if we go back to the 2020 US Open, the Spaniard beat today’s opponent Claire Liu (6/2 6/4).
In 2021, the 25-year-old won 26 of her 38 matches on hard court, and five of those came in winning Guadalajara. Sorribes Tormo also made the semi-finals of both Cleveland and Monterrey, plus quarter-finals in Abu Dhabi, Miami and Montreal.
During that last campaign, Sara won hard-court matches against Samsonova, Muchova, Barty, Jabeur, Bouzkova and Rybakina.
As it stands, Sorribes Tormo is ranked 41, and she comes into this match on the back of a 21/13 YTD. In her last tournament, she made the semi-final of Palermo, and earlier on in the year the QF of Madrid. Finally, she lists Haddad Maia, Pavlyuchenkova, Osaka and Kasatkina amongst this years victims.
Meanwhile, Claire Liu is 25/15 YTD, but just 10/8 on hard court. Her win rate is 55.2% on this surface, which compares to her average 61.8%. The 22 year old is ranked at 81, that is 7 places lower than her career-high of 74.
To make the main draw, Liu came through two rounds of qualifying. In the first of those she needed 3 sets to get past 15 year old Victoria Mboko, a player ranked 512. Beating Ellen Perez was easier (6/3 6/0), albeit we need to recognise that player is in desperate form!
For the most part, Sorribes Tormo is playing at the same level. She’s proven at a higher level than Liu, and her record in Canada is a good one!
