SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY vs SOUTHAMPTON – PREVIEW

ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP

Newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday will be taking on relegated Southampton. Incidentally, Wednesday made it into the Championship by winning the Division One play-off. Whereas, Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League, 11 points behind the safety zone reached by Everton!

OWLS

With the finances of the clubs changing for better and worse, there have been a number of comings and goings. In fact, Sheffield Wednesday bought in 7 players and allowed 7 to leave. Also, Xisco Muñoz was appointed the new manager.

For the record, the Owls made seven signings including Ashley Fletcher. The striker is on a season loan from Watford with the option to buy. The front line will also be aided by the signing of Monaco winger Anthony Musaba. For the midfield, Juan Delgado arrived on a free transfer from Pacos Ferreira. Lastly, the new defenders are Pol Valentin (Dijon), Di’Shon Valentin ( Man Utd U21) and Reece James (Blackpool).

At the time of writing, Sheffield Wednesday has a 23-man squad with an average age of 27.7. It will be interesting to see if the new coach sticks with his favored 4-3-3, a system that worked for Wednesday last season!

SAINTS

Meanwhile, the Saints have appointed a new manager Russell Martin. The 37-year-old was in charge of Swansea and MK Dons before arriving on the south coast.

From what we understand, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Lyanco, and Romeo Lavia are wanting to leave. However, the core of the Premiership squad is going to remain intact, with James Ward-Prowse expected to keep the Captains armband. With players such as Kyle Walker-Peters, Tina Livramento, Che Adams, and Sulemana ready to go again, the new boss inherited a highly competitive squad.

CONCLUSION

Let’s start with a bit of a perspective; The value of James Ward-Prowse is twice that of the whole Sheffield Wednesday squad. By the way, he’s not alone in being a high-value player in the visitor’s team. While the Owls will be excited for a new life back in the championship, it’s hard to imagine them containing an opponent with abundantly more class.
