SORANA CIRSTEA vs BELINDA BENCIC – PREVIEW
WTA US OPEN
Belinda Bencic won (6/7 6/2 3/6) her last-round match against Lin Zhu, but she failed to impress. Indeed, the difference in the day was experience, in that the Swiss player is more used to playing on the big stage.
For the record, Bencic ended that match with -20 which can be broken down to 33 winners against 53 unforced errors. Also, from 102 serves, she hit just 1 ace against 5 double faults. We can also point to her saving 8 from 12 breakpoints which compared to her opponent’s 5 from 9.
Consequently, Bencic won a fine-margin match by mentally outstaying her opponent. All the same, the match took a fatiguing 2:42 to complete.
Previously, the 26-year-old was short odds to beat both Kamilla Rakhimova and Yuriko Miyazaki. While she won both matches in straight sets, that would have been expected!
TOP OF HER GAME
As for Sorana Cirstea, she comes into this on the back of beating the world number 4 ranked player Elena Rybakina.
After winning the first set 6/3, Cirstea was unfortunate to lose the 2nd set in a tiebreak (6/8). Nevertheless, she didn’t let her head drop, and an early break in the deciding set was enough to see her through!
For the most part, the 33 year old showed plenty of composure against her big-hitting opponent. The stats show she made more winners (33-30) and fewer (42 – 55) unforced errors. Furthermore, her serve held up well (66% on 63%), and she ended with more aces (4) than double faults (3).
By the way, Cirstea leads the head-to-head 2-1, albeit her opponent won the only meeting here.
In conclusion, Cirstea is at the top of her game, and she’s being offered at generous odds. Despite being the higher-ranked player, the same can’t be said of Bencic. If Sorana brings her A-Game, she should get the job done!
