SWITZERLAND vs ITALY: BETTING PREVIEW & PICK

EURO 2024

As we mentioned before the tournament, the Italian squad lacks strength in depth. Although the Azzurri play cohesively as a team, they are still quite ordinary.

Italy began the tournament with a fortunate win over Albania. Their opponents scored the quickest goal of the tournament, but Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolo Barella helped Luciano Spalletti’s team take the lead. After that, Italy focused on maintaining possession and the game slowed down significantly.

Spalletti’s men were then outplayed for 85 minutes by Spain. The 1-0 scoreline didn’t reflect Spain’s dominance, with one commentator remarking, “There was one well-oiled machine, and then there was Italy.” La Roja dominated with 20 goal attempts to Italy’s 4, and 8 shots on target to Italy’s 1. Only Italian goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the Azzurri from a thrashing!

In the final group match, Italy benefited from a bit of luck. With stoppage time almost over, Mattia Zaccagni curled a long-distance shot past Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic to equalize, knocking the better team, Croatia, out of the tournament.

On scrutinizing this Italian squad, they remain a limited group of players. These odds are based on reputation rather than reality!

Following a 2nd yellow card, Ricardo Calafiori is suspended. Gianluca Mancini is the most natural replacement, so expect him to be in the starting lineup.

SWITZERLAND HAVE WHAT IT TAKES

Switzerland’s tournament story started strong with a win over Hungary. However, they followed it up with an uninspiring 1-1 draw against Scotland and an unfortunate 1-1 draw against Germany.

In the match against Germany, Dan Ndoye gave the Nati a 1-0 lead at 28 minutes, and Granit Xhaka nearly made it 2-0 at 88 minutes. However, German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer pulled off a great save, and Niklas Fullkrug equalized two minutes into injury time.

With that late goal, Germany reclaimed the top spot in the group, while Switzerland finished second. Nevertheless, the irony is we believe Murat Yakin’s team has an easier route into the next round.

For this match, Yakin will need to make at least one change. Wing-back Silvan Widmer is suspended, so Fabian Rieder, Steven Zuber, and Michel Aebischer are all potential candidates to fill the position.

We have no hesitation in calling Switzerland a strong bet!
