TAKING ON THE SHORT ODDS FAVOURITE
LINGFIELD 1:05 ROYAL ATHENA 9/2
Following 4 runs in NHF, JEUNE BELLE is gearing up for her hurdling debut. Lucy Wadham’s mare improved for each run, and last time out she finished 2nd at Cheltenham. She outperformed the odds of 33/1 and followed winning on the 3rd attempt at Huntingdon.
Nevertheless, despite being progressive, the 5-year-old has yet to prove herself over hurdles. I am weary of horses who were kept to bumpers for more than 1-2 runs because it suggests they are not the slickest of jumpers. Lastly, Bryony Frost’s mount is priced at an unappealing 8/11, which is some type of Monday morning joke!
After running in two bumpers, Nicky Henderson is transitioning MADAM RYDER to hurdles. While the 5-year-old ran a fair race to finish 2nd of 5 at Bangor, the bare form is nothing special. In short, the mount of James Bowen will need to improve for timber.
On bumper form, GOLDEN MILLIE would have the measure of Nicky Henderson’s mare. The Simon Earle trained 5-year-old landed odds of 125/1 to win at Ffos Las, and in two subsequent races, she ran fair races under a penalty. If James Best can get her jumping, she’s entitled to be thereabouts!
As for the most likely winner, I’m siding with ROYAL ATHENA. The James Owen trained 3-year-old won a flat race, in which she’s currently rated 60.
The daughter of GOLDEN HORN could only finish 5th of 11 on her hurdling debut. However, equipped with a first-time hood, Lily Pinchin’s mount was able to reverse the form with GRAIN OF HOPE at Fakenham.
Despite being penalized for that win, the battle-hardened filly is still receiving 8 pounds from the older runners. She’s in great form and capable of further improvement, and capable of improving in this category!
