VPS won their last three games against league leaders KuPS (0-1) and Inter Turku (3-0 & 0-2) twice. For the record, those nine points moved the Stripe into 9th of 12 in the table!
For now, at least, Jussi Nuorela seems to have found his best team. After some disappointing performances, goalkeeper Toppo Marttinen was replaced by Jonathan Viscosi. However, the 26-year-old returned for the last three games, and he was man of the match against Inter (0-2).
We have to point at Nuorela’s team being a little fortunate in two of those recent matches. In fact, the win against KuPS was made easier after their opponent had a player sent off in one minute! And, while it is hard to fault the 3-0 win over Inter, the reverse game (0-2) could have gone either way. I
In that most recent match, Inter had more goal attempts (20-13) and more shots on target (7-6). The difference on the day was converting chances, with Marttinen saving his team on a number of occasions!
Meanwhile, AC Oulu has already beaten VPS twice this season. While one of those fixtures was a cup match decided on penalties, the other was a 2-1 home win!
Following a slow start to the campaign, Ricardo Duarte’s men are in full flow now. Indeed, the visitors won their last three league matches to go 4th in the table!
In the last round, Oulu kept things simple to record a 1-2 win in Mariehamn. Their previous match ended in a 3-0 win over Haka, and before that Duarte’s men won in SJK. To add a bit of perspective to that win, SJK are the joint League Leaders and have two games in hand!
By the way, with 17 points taken on the road, the visitors are the best away team in the league.
